Don't Leave Home Without Them When Networking

From: How to Wow by Frances Cole Jones
  • Remember that 7 percent of your impact comes from the words you say, 38 percent from your tonal quality while saying it, and 55 percent from what your body is doing while you're saying it
  • Speaking in story will help both you and your listener retain and commit to your message
  • Introducing yourself - saying your name - is a presentation opportunity. Don't squander it.
  • Delete useless modifiers from your vocabulary. Something is only amazing, terrific, or horrific if you tell me why.
  • Breathing from your diaphragm lowers your voice, increasing other's perception of your authority/command of your material and calming your nervous system.
  • Make sure your words and tone match. If you’re saying you’re happy, you need to sound happy. If you’re saying you’re sorry, you need to sound sorry.
  • “You” has been flagged as the most persuasive word in the English language. Use it often.
  • When in doubt, wear blue. Investing in high-quality basics – a well-made suit, briefcase, or watch – will always pay off.
  • Relaxing the back of your neck will help to calm the nerves controlling your digestion and respiration.
  • Listen to find out, to discover, to explore.
  • Writing a “Diary Entry for Tomorrow” can help you stay focused today.
  • More isn’t better. Better is better.
  • When you give your listeners the “because” behind your decision, you increase buy-in from 60 to 94 percent.
  • How you enter and exit a situation or conversation is as important as what occurs during that situation or conversation.
  • If you only have Plan A and Plan B, then you don’t actually have two options. Put together Plan C.
  • Making the difficult look easy is far more impressive than “showing your work.”
  • Be sure you are the one directing and starring in your life.
